Food Network Chef Joins H.I.S. Agency to Judge Local Teen Bake-Off

Local youth program hosts 2nd annual Sugar-licious Bake-Off for girls ages 13-18 to teach them cooking skills while encouraging them to pursue their passion of becoming great chefs.

SOUTHFIELD, MI, April 13, 2011

Helping Individuals Succeed (H.I.S.) Agency has partnered with The Culinary Studio in Southfield, MI to host their second Sugar-licious Bakeoff on Saturday, April 16, 2011. Girls between the ages of 13 to 18 are invited to come out and put their culinary skills to the test and compete for the $40 grand prize. The contest will take place from 9am-1pm and will be immediately followed by a bake sale from 1pm-2pm. All contestants will sell their delicious goods along with desserts donated by local restaurants. All entries and dessert donations from local restaurants will be sold to raise money for One Pearl, a division of the H.I.S. Agency, which teaches young girls critical life skills through etiquette, leadership and self-esteem building mentoring programs.

The Sugar-licious Bakeoff will take place inside the new state-of-the art kitchen at the Culinary Studio courtesy of Chef Cassie. Contestants are required to make all desserts from scratch using a family recipe and/or one of their very own favorites. A very dynamic group of female chefs will serve as judges for the contest. Eve Aronoff, who has been featured on Celebrity Chef on the Food Network, Tonia Perry from The Delectable Edibles, and radio personality Tracey McCaskill from Mix 92.3. In addition, several local bakeries & restaurants including Cake Luv, Reen's Bakery, and Pinwheel Bakery, will donate some of their signature items to be sold during the bake sale immediately following the competition, which ends at 1pm.

H.I.S. Agency's Founder and CEO, Derschaun Sharpley, learned through working with youth that many of them lack basic cooking skills. About a year ago, while working with several group home managers, Derschaun met a young mother that had no knowledge of how to boil an egg. "It's devastating that some girls have no one to show them the ropes," says Derschaun. She knows that a caring hand in a fun environment empowers and build self-esteem in our youth. The Sugar-licious Bake off will foster confidence in the contestants while teaching them cooking skills and encouraging them to pursue their passion of becoming great chefs.

Please come out and encourage our girls in this bakeoff while enjoying some wonderful desserts!

Derschaun Sharpley will be available for interviews and/or or further information.
