TUCSON, AZ, April 24, 2011 (Press-News.org) Turf Paradise will be on the cutting-edge of horse racing innovation on April 30, 2011, when the EquiSight helmet camera system will be used during the track's Arizona Breeders' Day races. The EquiSight camera system allows viewers a first-person perspective of the racing action, putting the fan in the middle of the heart-pounding excitement.
The EquiSight camera will be worn by all jockeys in two races. Following each race, the video replay from the winning horse will be shown by Turf Paradise to give fans a new way of seeing how the race was won. EquiSight is teaming-up with GoPro, a helmet camera system company, and Turf Paradise to give horse racing fans a chance to "ride the race". One of the featured races will be named in honor of GoPro, and a helmet camera will be awarded to the connections of the horse that wins the race. This jockey cam day will show how EquiSight's cameras can be used to enhance the broadcasting of the sport of horse racing to its fans. In addition to the video footage, EquiSight will have an interaction tent for horse racing fans located on the apron in front of the grandstand.
The EquiSight camera system is being developed as a project by David P. Matt and Kenleigh Hobby, who are currently students in the Race Track Industry Program at the University of Arizona. According to Matt and Hobby, horse racing has difficulty appealing to a younger audience because the current presentation of the sport is outdated, two-dimensional, and fails to use technology such as the internet to improve the fan's experience. By taking the fan and putting them "in the saddle", people will be able to feel the speed, beauty, and intensity that is the "Sport of Kings".
Although helmet cameras have been worn by jockeys in the past, they were only placed on one or two jockeys in a particular race. The EquiSight camera system will place helmet cameras on multiple jockeys, giving fans several different angles and views to choose from. While it is still in development, the goal of EquiSight is to give fans a complete, 360° view of a race from every possible perspective.
Besides improving the viewing experience for the average fan, Matt and Hobby believe that the EquiSight camera system will help horse racing officials, such as stewards, as they make judgments about possible infractions that occur during races.
