Following the disaggregation of the New South Wales Electricity Commission (trading as Pacific Power), TransGrid was formed as a statutory authority in 1995, under NSW Electricity Transmission Authority Act of 1994. TransGrid became corporatised in 1998 under NSW State Owned Corporations Act of 1989. Now, the state-owned corporation owns and manages one of the largest high-voltage electricity transmission networks in Australia, connecting generators, distributors and major end users in NSW and the ACT.

TransGrid's network includes over 12,600 kilometres of transmission lines and connections from NSW to both Queensland and Victoria, facilitating interstate energy trading. The company currently supplies over 3 million households and businesses with a reliable power supply.
