FARMINGTON HILLS, MI, May 04, 2011 (Press-News.org) The Neighborhood Service Organization's Youth Initiatives Project (YIP) will host its fourth annual Male Teen Summit and Resource Fair on Saturday, May 7 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Brenda Scott Academy of Theater Arts (18400 Hoover, Detroit).
Open to boys 12 to 18 years old, the Summit will address important issues concerning adolescent males including employment, education, health, mentoring and entrepreneurship. Ken Harris, Detroit Charter Commission member will serve as the keynote speaker.
"This is an opportunity for the young men in our community to have a voice as we listen and support them," said Frank McGhee, program director of the Youth Initiatives Project. "The goal is to show that we support our young men by providing opportunities for them as well."
The Youth Initiatives Project is comprised of youth leaders who coordinate events, including summits, forums, rallies and leadership sessions that positively impact teen males in schools, churches and community organizations.
Following the program, YIP will host a Resource Fair available to attendees from noon to 1:30 p.m. The Resource Fair will serve as an additional employment and educational opportunity for teens, helping to offset the drought in summer youth employment. Agencies including City Connect and the Skillman Foundation will be present as well as representatives from education, mentoring and health sectors
The Youth Initiatives Project molds youth leaders into community activists and provides youth leadership and advocacy training focused on anti-violence and substance abuse prevention. The youth work closely with public officials and community leaders to ensure a well-rounded experience.
