Livestock also suffer traffic accidents during transport
2011-05-13
A Spanish study has analysed traffic accidents involving cattle being transported for human consumption in the country for the first time. Despite the "relatively" low mortality rate, animals suffer high-risk situations that cause pain and stress. The scientists say that specific protocols for action are needed with regard to these accidents, and to prepare the emergency services to deal with them.
Most of the 86 lorry accidents identified from 2000 to 2009 in Spain involved the transportation of pigs (57%), followed by cattle (30%), chickens (8%), and sheep (5%). Despite ...

Sensors that can stretch
2011-05-13
This release is available in German.
The car is racing far too fast toward the tail end of a traffic jam – a crash is inevitable. The inflated airbag can protect the car's occupants. But if the person in the passenger seat is leaning too far forward, perhaps looking for something in a bag in the foot space, the force of the airbag can cause injury.
Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Silicate Research ISC in Würzburg have now developed sensors that can help prevent such scenarios. These sensors can be integrated into the car seat, for example, where they ...

Controlling robotic arms is child's play
2011-05-13
This release is available in German.
Catching a ball is no problem for most people. Getting a robotic arm to catch a ball using a catcher attachment is a bit trickier. To find out just how tricky it is – or to see if it's easier than they think – visitors to the Sensor+Test trade fair in Nuremberg should head for the Fraunhofer booth, Booth 202 in Hall 12. There, researchers will be presenting an industrial robotic arm with six joints, at the end of which is a catcher. As time goes by, it gets tougher to 'just remember this'
2011-05-13
It's something we just accept: the fact that the older we get, the
more difficulty we seem to have remembering things. We can leave our
cars in the same parking lot each morning, but unless we park in the
same space each and every day, it's a challenge eight hours later to
recall whether we left the SUV in the second or fifth row. Or, we can
be introduced to new colleagues at a meeting and will have forgotten
their names before the handshake is over. We shrug and nervously
reassure ourselves that our brains' "hard drives" are just too full
to handle the ...
Artificial grammar learning reveals inborn language sense, JHU study shows
2011-05-13
Parents know the unparalleled joy and wonder of hearing a beloved child's first words turn quickly into whole sentences and then babbling paragraphs. But how human children acquire language-which is so complex and has so many variations-remains largely a mystery. Fifty years ago, linguist and philosopher Noam Chomsky proposed an answer: Humans are able to learn language so quickly because some knowledge of grammar is hardwired into our brains. In other words, we know some of the most fundamental things about human language unconsciously at birth, without ever being taught.
