NAPLES, ITALY, May 26, 2011 (Press-News.org) The 46th edition of the Marathon of the Capri Naples Gulf begins on June 19th, with participants due to swim for about six or seven hours in open water.
Starting at Capri's Marina Grande, people will be asked to battle the weather and sea conditions to reach the Via Caracciolo finishing line in Naples.
The course is well established in the open water swimming world, this being the 46th time it has hosted the marathon event, which first took place in 1954.
It is strictly for advanced swimmers and attracts many top professionals, with a significant prize pot up for grabs.
The Marathon of the Capri Naples Gulf forms part of the FINA Open Water Swimming Grand Prix.
Italian athlete Giulio Travaglio holds the record for the most wins in Naples, taking the top prize five times, while the best time was recorded by American participant Paul Asmuth, who finished in 06:35.03 hours.
As a sport, open water swimming has made huge advances in recent years, becoming an Olympic discipline in 2008.
Swimming enthusiasts can find a huge range of Naples hotels at LateRooms.com, which recommends options such as the Grand Hotel Parkers Naples.
