SHELBY TOWNSHIP, MI, June 03, 2011 (Press-News.org) The Utica Center For Mathematics, Science & Technology is a highly selective magnet school that features the most rigorous college level curriculum that Utica Community Schools, the second largest school district in Michigan, has to offer. Courses are demanding, with a curriculum that has included Physics AC, Foundations of Calculus, AP Calculus AB, AP Java Programming, AP Calculus BC, AP Biology and AP Chemistry over the past two years.
For a student to be accepted in this program is quite an accomplishment, indeed. For that student to be accepted and maintain high grade averages even though English is her second language seems an impossible feat. Yet, for Utica High School Senior Linda Camaj, the most recent recipient of the Ban R. Barbat, DDS-PC Scholarship, a long ago promise made to her Albanian grandmother has kept her on track and driven to one goal - to become a doctor.
Linda's family immigrated to the United States from Albania shortly before her birth and she grew up speaking only Albanian. Her desire to enter the medical field was firmly planted once she witnessed Albania's tremendous lack of health care during her first visit back to see her grandmother. Her journey towards helping in this field begins this Fall at the University of Michigan as her education towards becoming a medical doctor takes place.
The Ban R. Barbat Scholarship is awarded annually to a student interested in a health related career. Eligibility requires the student to have a 3.0 GPA or higher, provide verification of acceptance into a college or university and provide letters of recommendation.
