SUMMERVILLE, SC, June 05, 2011 (Press-News.org) This is a unique technical program that focuses on major challenges facing the indoor air and climate community. It is a forum for researchers & practitioners to exchange ideas, a great professional development opportunity for students, and a showcase for Austin.
James Tucker, Ph.D, COO & VP of Technology, will be presenting A Review of ASTM D7391-09 Standard Test Method for Categorization and Quantification of Airborne Fungal Structures in an Inertial Impaction Sample by Optical Microscopy during the conference. From 2005 through 2009, a group of industrial professionals representing laboratories, consultants, and equipment manufacturers gathered to create this consensus method from ASTM IAQ committee D22.08. The first meeting was lead by Eva Ewing, with subcommittee chairman Larry Pierce and was attended by ~60 other industry professional. After 5 years and approximately 12 drafts, the drafting and review process was completed, and ASTM D7391-09, Standard Test Method for Categorization and Quantification of Airborne Fungal Structures in an Inertial Impaction Sample by Optical Microscopy was published.
This is a review of the ASTM method D7391-09, a procedure that uses direct microscopy to analyze the deposit of inertial impaction particles from both slit and round trace bioaerosol samples. The method describes minimum criteria and procedures for categorizing and enumerating fungal structures by morphological type.
Non-viable impactor samples are one tool used by indoor air quality professionals to characterize residential and commercial buildings. Inertial impactors are devices for collecting particles separated from an air stream by inertia to force an impact onto an adhesive surface. Designs include impactors that collect particles through a slit or circular shaped jets operating at measured flow rates.
The resulting impactor sample is then mounted with a clear fluid or stain and cover slip, then subjected to optical microscopy by a trained analyst. The total microscope magnification range of ~150-400X or greater and point-to-point resolution of 0.7um-0.5um or better is specified to characterize and enumerate fungal structures in in the sample trace, captured by the adhesive.
Please visit the ASTM website, http://www.astm.org to purchase copies of the full method.
Please join us at Booth 11, June 6th-8th, for discounts, giveaways, and a chance to win an ipod touch!
