Public Invited to NFL's "Mr. Irrelevant" Bash at Newport Dunes

Food, Live Music and More to Highlight Event Aimed at Families June 20

2011-06-15
LONG BEACH, CA, June 15, 2011 (Press-News.org) Despite finishing last in the NFL's draft, defensive end Cheta Ozougwu will be basking in glory thanks to some hard-core Orange County football fans when the rookie player is honored during Irrelevant Week XXXVI. The festivities will kick off with a celebration at Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort (1131 Back Bay Dr., Newport Beach) on Monday, June 20 at 5:30 p.m. The public is invited to join Ozougwu as he is showered with gifts at the arrival beach party and barbecue. The tongue-in-cheek celebration will feature live music, a full bar and various activities that will take place on the resort's sandy shore. Tickets are $10 per person and proceeds will support the Orange County Goodwill Fitness Center, benefiting Mater Dei High School student Cory Hahn and other athletes who have suffered spinal cord injuries. Those who wish to donate gifts for Mr. Irrelevant must do so by Thursday, June 17; drop off location is 3723 Birch St., Suite 11, Newport Beach. (Pick-ups may be arranged by calling 949-263-0727).

Ozougwu, who played defensive end at Rice University, was the 254th — and final pick — in the seventh round of the 2011 NFL Draft. He will play for the Houston Texans when the season begins. Irrelevant Week founder Paul Salata announced Ozougwu's name last month after the NFL's annual two-day draft announcements were made. Salata's idea of honoring the NFL's last draft pick inspired the Irrelevant Week motto of "doing something nice for someone for no reason."

Among the Irrelevant Week festivities are the Arrival Party, VIP trip to the Disneyland Resort, the Irrelevant banquet featuring the presentation of the Lowsman Trophy at the Newport Marriott Hotel, and a barbecue and regatta at the Balboa Yacht Club.

Newport Dunes Resort is a 100-acre waterfront resort featuring a 386-site state-of-the-art RV park, 450-slip marina and a private waveless beach and playground that has been enjoyed by families since 1958. Newport Dunes is also is home to 24 mobile cottages that the public may rent. Guests may rent kayaks, windsurfers, pedal boats, bicycles and 18-foot electric boats throughout the year. Newport Dunes Resort is located at 1131 Back Bay Dr., in Newport Beach. Visit http://www.newportdunes.com or call (949) 729-3863.
