2011-06-16
NEW YORK, NY, June 16, 2011 (Press-News.org) Contemporary artists Anders Johnson, Gregory Kalliche, Kat Hodges, and R.C. Sayler are proud to present their collective effort Feign and Figment, a group exhibition at TriBeCa's Frontrunner Gallery (59 Franklin Street New York, NY 10013) from June 23 to July 10. The opening reception is on June 23 from 6-9 p.m. The hours of the exhibit are 1-8 p.m. (Wednesday, Thursday, Friday) and 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. (Saturday and Sunday).

The title Feign and Figment are terms that neighbour the linguistic beginnings of the word fiction, derived from the Latin fingere, which means to form or contrive. One can argue that all art shares a fictive structure that is then distinguished into genres and refined by formalist investigations particular to each. The notion of fiction in art is so fundamental it becomes assumed, absorbed, and almost invisible. This project established a collaboration among artists whose practices and methods don't readily accept the fiction and fabrication inherent in making art, and instead complicate these ideas in order to more fully address them.

"Our work addresses a place that we all inhabit: real life, where we try to make something, a reality, out of experience; trying to make forums out of information, actions, daily life, time; quite literally trying to make something out of ourselves," said artist Gregory Kalliche.

Each of the four artists has engaged uniquely with the idea of fiction, recharging an elemental notion with particularly contemporary concerns. In their work we see all of it, the artwork, the studio, the artist, as made things.

"Feign and Figment indicates the ways that we are all performers and believers, suggesting that what we know and who we are, are collections of made-up stories," said artist Kat Hodges. "This tension, between a fictive life and a fictive art, is on view at the exhibition where artifice is being made actual."

R.C. Sayler, Anders Johnson, Gregory Kalliche and Kat Hodges all graduated from MFA programs at the Rhode Island School of Design in 2010.

Feign and Figment is made possible by the generous support of the Rhode Island School of Design Graduate Studies Grant, juried by Mass MoCA contemporary curator Susan Cross and awarded by Patricia Phillips, Dean of RISD Graduate Studies.
