HOUSTON, TX, September 17, 2010 (Press-News.org) On Thursday, October 14th, and Friday, October 15th, Houston interior design firm and boutique Laura U Collection, will host a Fall Benefit for Scout's Honor Rescue: an organization providing shelter for rescued cats and dogs in the greater Houston area. After adopting Sophie, a cute and loveable eight month old Doberman, through Scout's Honor Rescue, Laura Umansky, Owner and Creative Director of Laura U, wanted to expose the Houston community to Scout's Honor's incredible hard work and dedication to abandoned animals.
This two day benefit event will start on Thursday, October 14th from 6-9pm at the Laura U Collection (located at 1840 Westheimer Rd.). It will continue on Friday, October 15th from 10am-2pm at the Danny Jackson Family Bark (Dog) Park (located at 4700 Westpark Dr.). On Thursday, guests will enjoy an evening of dog inspired art and designs, featuring three dynamic artists: April Murphy, Kim Hartz and Susie Tritter, followed by a half-day long dog outing at the park where the Laura U team will collect any additional cash or in-kind donations. To make this event possible, Laura U partnered with Houston Magazine and the Central Houston Animal Hospital. The goal of this Scout's Honor Fall Charity event is to bring pet lovers, art collectors, artists, designers, and the designer-inspired together for a worthy cause.
Scout's Honor Rescue: Scout's Honor Rescue, Inc. is a nonprofit organization focusing on rescuing and placing dogs and cats within greater Houston and its surrounding areas. Scout's Honor was formed in May 2006 by six volunteer rescuers who decided to pool their experience and love for animals to make a difference in Houston. This organization is often the last resort for animals that are left abandoned to die in the pounds or on the streets. These loving animals are given a second chance by being placed into loving, permanent homes where they receive the love and attention they truly deserve.
Laura U Collection: An atelier for the designer and the designer-inspired, Laura U offers customized, handmade furniture and unique accents for the home. The work of local artists and internationally found objects and fine decorative pieces, all mix and mingle at the Laura U Collection. Fashion-inspired home accessories, hand-forged lighting, and special gifts are also a part of this unexpected collection. Laura Umansky, (President and Creative Director) brings her spirited design sensibility not only to her boutique in Houston, but also into her clients' interiors. Her classic architectural education and international design experience are channeled into each and every design decision. With a focus on high end residential, vacation homes, hospitality, and commercial interiors, the team at Laura U brings a classically current look to every design.
The Artists:
April Murphy - After a series of unfortunate events, April was forced to "literally" stop and smell the roses and think about the important things in life. It was 25 years since she had painted her last stroke when her husband showed her a photo of their lovable felines. The composition she saw from this photo immediately gave her a vision which included bright colors and sharp contrasts. April adores animals and has always found comfort in having many pets around her home. April believes that her ability to combine her love for animals and for the easel is very "cool". Her work is filled with humor and whimsy and often brings smiles and laughter to its audience.
Kim Hartz- Kim Hartz began photographing everything and anything at a very early age. She was and still is the "official" photographer for all family events and social gatherings among friends. Kim began her passion for photography in a dark room with black and white film. She has since gone digital and photographs something else she is extremely passionate about: pets. Her studio specializes in creating fine art portraiture of pets and their people. Kim made the switch to exclusively photographing pets when she and her husband brought Abby their golden retriever, home. Kim feels that working with pets, both dogs and cats, is such a rewarding experience because they are always in good spirits and happy to see you. Her goal is to capture a pet's unique personality in each photograph she takes, while also creating images that pet owners will continue to cherish for years to come.
Susie Tritter- DOGUE Designs is the creation of Susie Tritter. Susie has been sewing since she made her first Barbie dress at the age of nine under the supreme tutelage of her mother, Marilyn Tritter. After struggling with a life-threatening illness, Susie was forced to make a sudden career change and so DOGUE Designs came to life. Every piece is handmade and tailored with the greatest attention to detail and quality. Because they are only made in limited quantities, using only the finest materials, and never mass- produced, each garment is unique and is considered a couture piece. When asked why dog clothes? Susie has no definite answer to that question. She believes that today she has a new-found passion for life and she has fun every single day doing exactly what she loves to do, creating one of a kind couture pieces for lovable pooches.
