LateRooms.com - Barcelona Prepares to Host Corpus Christi

Be sure to check out 'the dancing egg' during the Corpus Christi celebrations later this month.

2011-06-22
BARCELONA, SPAIN, June 22, 2011 (Press-News.org) The Corpus Christi celebrations in Barcelona offer visitors a real opportunity to get to know the city's culture.

Running from June 23rd to 26th this year, the occasion sees fountains decorated with colourful flowers and a stunning parade take place on the final day.

One of the most unique parts of Corpus Christi is a phenomenon known as L'ou com Balla, which means 'the dancing egg'.

Egg shells are placed on the jets of fountains to make them jig about as if they were moving to the sounds of music, a custom that has been in place since 1637.

The Casa de l'Ardiaca and Museu Frederic Mares are two of the places where this entertaining activity can be seen.

On the Sunday, the Corpus Christi procession will set off from Avinguda de la Catedral and parade around the city before returning to where it started.

Spectators can expect to see traditional festival 'giants' and 'beasts' such as eagles, lions and dragons. It is free to watch.

Corpus Christi is Latin for 'the body of Christ' and it is the Eucharist that is ostensibly the centre of the celebrations.
