Hotels-Paris.co.uk - Homeless World Cup Comes to Paris

Street soccer event helps the world's homeless in the Champs de Mars.

2011-06-25
PARIS, FRANCE, June 25, 2011 (Press-News.org) Ever since the first Homeless World Cup tournament took place in 2003 in Graz, Austria, the event has snowballed into a spectacle that has gone from 18 teams to 64 at this year's contest in Paris.

48 male sides and 12 female teams will take to the arena from August 21st-28th in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower in the attractive Champs de Mars.

A special pitch will be constructed, with teams operating under strict street soccer rules, designed to encourage fair play and make sure all players receive their fair share of playing time.

Countries represented include hosts France, Brazil, the USA, Australia and all the home nations. The event is designed to highlight the astonishing number of homeless people in the world, and the hope is that through this tournament at least some of the players will be able to go on to better things.

This year's tournament is supported by Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, as well as former World Cup winners Lilian Thuram and Emmanuel Petit.

Hotels-Paris can offer plenty of cheap hotels for those who wish to attend the event, with the excellent Helvetia just one of the many options available.
