Revenge of the Platypus Releases Simultaneous Vocals/Instrumental "Dream" CDs

Trip Hop artist designs package the way most music supervisors want it. Properly packaged and easily licensed indie electronic chill wave for film, TV, commercials and video games from a musical artist who is also a character modeler.

2011-06-25
NEVADA CITY, CA, June 25, 2011 (Press-News.org) West Coast trip hop band Revenge of the Platypus has been compared to everyone from Brooklyn duo Javelin to electronic duo Ratatat, but he draws his inspiration from sources ranging from RJD2 to Leonard Cohen. These are the sounds of electronic music, chill wave and indie. It is perfectly designed for the placement in Film, TV and Commercials, what with its offering as two separate CDs, "Dreams" (the one with vocals) and "Dreams Instrumentals" (the one without).

The creation of Pamona, Illinois-born Malachi Bazan, "Dreams" and "Dreams Instrumentals" follow the release of Revenge of the Platypus's initial recording "First Flight" from 2010. All of his art finds its genesis in Malachi's long history in the film and video game community. As a digital sculptor (sometimes called a character modeler), Malachi worked on the movies "The Barnyard," "Night at the Museum" and "Pulse." He then turned his attention to video games: "Shadow Run" and Sony's spy-centered "The Agency."

It is impossible to completely categorize Revenge of the Platypus, though the clearest comparison is to electronic music pioneer BT, particularly his multi-media release "This Binary Universe." The two "Dreams" releases are, in reality, a mix of many genres. It is a departure from more mainstream music. Revenge of the Platypus has developed an eclectic way to create its relaxing, romantic and often haunting atmosphere. Their masterfully performed soulful melodies are passionate, thought-provoking and complex in their arrangements, while also containing a feeling of pure simplicity and effortlessness. Tracks seem like a breeze when indeed it is a very intense effort. All in all, it makes for a beautiful and inspiring body of work.

The band, which occasionally features Malachi's sister and her husband, takes its name from the Kevin Smith quote: "Remember even God has a sense of humor. Just look at the platypus." Malachi thinks it's fun working with other artists. He remembers fondly his stint as co-producer of Zyzygy's last release, "The Great Unknown."

This is Classic Rock Hip Hop/ Trip Hop built on a foundation of bona fides. Rhythmic collages of thick beats and soft strings are punctuated with organic instruments including harpsichord, violins, mandolins and trumpets. This is music that sounds as though it belongs as a soundtrack to an epic film or video game.

As one reviewer put it, Malachi's music "strikes me with the feel of old school video game music from the 1980's...they just don't make creative tracks like that anymore."

People may hear different things in this universal package, but Malachi hopes what comes through is this: "Have fun, bring a message, love what you do, and do what you love."
