FORT WORTH, TX, July 01, 2011 (Press-News.org) For the second time in two years, Mrs. Renfro's Salsas has been named a healthy snack food. In the July/August 2011 issue of Fitness Magazine, Mrs. Renfro's Pineapple Salsa was named among the Best Savory Snacks in the magazine's 5th Annual Fitness 2011 Healthy Food Awards.
Salsa, which now comes in a variety of innovative and exotic flavors and heat levels, has been trending among consumers in recent years, whose demand for hot and spicy foods and innovative flavors has been steadily on the rise.
"Once again we are simply thrilled for our products to receive this kind of recognition," said Doug Renfro, president of Renfro Foods, which manufactures the Mrs. Renfro's gourmet salsa line. "'Healthy' is definitely in and our salsa, as a healthy food product, complements a healthy lifestyle. Our salsas are fat-free, gluten-free and cholesterol-free."
More than 1,000 healthy snacks from hundreds of companies were submitted to Fitness magazine. Foods that were low in calories, fat, saturated fat, sodium, and added sugars made the first cut. Nutritionists Anar Allidina, RD, a nutritionist in private practice in New York City; Keri Gans, RD, author of The Small Change Diet; and Marissa Lippert, RD, author of The Cheater's Diet, then sorted through the 850-plus remaining products, analyzing the nutrition facts and ingredient labels to help Fitness determine which ones deserved to move to the next round for taste testing. The finalists were sampled and voted on by dozens of staffers throughout the company.
"As a healthy and convenient cooking ingredient, more and more consumers are cooking with salsa as a way to add great flavor to their meals," Renfro said. "And we are happy to help them out by providing simple, healthy and tasty recipes right on the label."
Last year, Mrs. Renfro's Habanero Salsa was named among the "125 Best Packaged Foods for Women" in Women's Health's 2010 November issue and Mrs. Renfro's Pineapple Salsa took top honors in the Processed Salsa-Fruit category, at the 2010 Scovie Awards, the world's leading recognition for hot and spicy products.
