RALEIGH, NC, July 01, 2011 (Press-News.org) Goodnight' s Comedy Club will host the East Coast Regional of the World Series of Comedy, a national stand-up comedy competition, from July 13 through July 16. Forty comics will compete through six shows at Goodnight's to determine the East Coast winner.
Like its namesake, the World Series of Comedy is a series of competitions that lead to a championship. In this version, the players are stand-up comics armed with only a microphone and jokes to help them hit it out of the park. Rather than being mere spectators, the crowd helps decide who advances to the main event in the entertainment capital of the world, Las Vegas. Approximately 500 professional and amateur stand-up comics nationwide compete in the World Series of Comedy every year.
Joe Lowers, creator of the World Series of Comedy, said Goodnight's was chosen to host the regional competition because of its reputation of being one of the best clubs in the country.
The winner from each summer regional competition receives automatic entry to the final round in the fall. The regional competition at Goodnight's will be interactive, and audience participation will aid the panel of professional judges in choosing the winners.
The main event will be held Sept. 19 through Sept. 24 in Las Vegas, and the winner will receive 35 weeks of paid comedy club work, a coveted prize in a business where livelihood depends on a calendar filled with bookings. The second-place winner receives 14 weeks of work, and the third-place winner receives 10 weeks.
Lowers said comics who participate in the Las Vegas event receive the added value of face-to-face time with talent buyers. "We've designed the main event to include networking opportunities for the comedians to meet and mingle with bookers from the top comedy clubs, including Goodnigh's," he said.
Goodnight's joins comedy clubs in Scottsdale, Ariz.; Dayton, Ohio; Wichita, Kan.; Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and St. Charles, Ill. as regional locations.
Tickets for the World Series of Comedy East Coast Regional range from $11.75 to $17.25 and are available for purchase at http://www.goodnightscomedy.com or by calling (919) 828-5233.
