NEW YORK, NY, September 18, 2010 (Press-News.org) The use of solar electricity continues to gain popularity as a renewable power source. Aside from its economical advantages, it is also "an ecologically sound solution to our energy needs." According to a top solar energy website, solar electricity "is clean, safe, quiet, and virtually maintenance-free".
With solar power becoming more affordable, more people are beginning to look into it as a permanent power source at home or in offices.
One of the advantages of solar electricity is that it is fully automatic and is very suitable for unmanned operation. Another website says, "It has no moving parts so the system has a very long lifetime; therefore it is virtually maintenance-free."
Solar electricity and solar power is usually achieved through the use of solar panels or photovoltaic (PV) panels. This panel is made of silicon, a natural element, which becomes electrically charged when exposed to sunlight. This panel works whenever there is sunlight, but will produce more electricity when the light is more intense.
According to SolarElectricityBasics.net, solar panels were originally used to power orbiting satellites or spacecraft in space where the use of fossil fuels was impractical. However, with the advancements in technology and the cheaper prices of PV panels, they are now used to provide additional electricity for structures especially those in remote locations. Solar power is also used in powering boats, electric cars, public street light, and home appliances including lamps and cell phones.
One example is the sun jar, which composes a glass Mason jar, solar cells, a rechargeable battery and three light emitting diode (LED) lights. The battery inside the jar charges during the day and at night powers the LED which then lights up the jar.
"The sun jar is automatic - there are no controls whatsoever on the outside, so you really don't have to do anything," says Joe Brown of Solar Electricity Blog.
According to SolarElectricityBasics.net, installing solar panels in residential areas very easy. "Fabricating a solar roof is as easy as counting from one to three. All you need are solar panels, in this case solar shingles and the other necessary materials that form a basic solar energy system. Many solar companies offer solar shingles designed as panels that fit the dimensions of a typical house roof. With a few tweaks you can have your own functioning solar roof."
