Rhonda will be running the San Francisco Marathon this year in an effort to raise money for the Himalayan Cataract Project.
Many don't know that 4 out of every 5 cases of blindness in the world could have been prevented with access to proper eye care. Care that is not expensive. A $20 donation will cover the costs of an operation to restore the sight of one individual. Imagine if a loved one was blind; a parent, a child, a grandparent. Now imagine for the price of one large pizza and wings, you have given - the gift of sight...
The Himalayan Cataract Project (HCP) has partnered with The San Francisco Marathon to raise awareness and funds for blindness in Ethiopia because the need for eye care is great. In the northern region of Tigray with a population of 5 million, the prevalence of blindness is 1.6%. The current surgical rate, approximately 6,000-7,000 cases per year, is merely keeping pace with the number of new cases. It is not sufficient to address the backlog of approximately 40,000. This is sobering given that Tigray has one of the highest surgical rates in the country.
