PHUKET, THAILAND, July 14, 2011 (Press-News.org) Eid Al Fitr is a four-day Muslim holiday signalling the end of Ramadan, which sees Muslims fasting for 30 days in order to refocus on their basic community values and the Lord, thanking him for his blessings.
On the first day of the Eid, after showering, brushing their teeth and putting on perfume and either new clothes or the best they have, Muslims will eat a small breakfast as it is forbidden to fast on this day.
This holiday is a time for forgiveness and brotherhood. Historically, it was the prophet Muhammad who asked his followers, as a sign of respect the Allah, to spend the month of Ramadan fasting and praying, with festive celebrations to mark its end.
The Eid Al Fitr celebration marks the end of the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and the beginning of the tenth month of Shawwal. Muslims can begin this month in contentment and happiness following their period of self-denial and religious devotion.
Children are commonly given gifts during Eid Al Fitr and in some cultures also money by adult friends and relatives.
This is a very important celebration for the people of Petra, and also signals the beginning of a four-day holiday for banks, business and government offices. It is therefore recommended that those visiting Petra for the festival book into one of the many Petra hotels early to avoid disappointment.
