NEW YORK, NY, July 29, 2011 (Press-News.org) Despues de descubrir que muchos hospitales y hogares de ancianos no pagan las horas extra a las enfermeras y demas empleados, el gobierno federal ha puesto en marcha una investigacion sobre las nominas en el sector de la atencion medica.

El New York Times recoge que el Departamento de Trabajo asegura que menos del 36% de los profesionales de atencion medica de Nueva York cumple con la legislacion federal laboral relativa a los salarios.

La legislacion relativa a la jornada laboral y los salarios exige que se paguen las horas extra a los empleados que trabajen mas de 40 horas semanales.

RIESGO PARA LOS PACIENTES

Si bien los profesionales de atencion medica merecen un salario justo, es mucho mas preocupante el riesgo que supone para los pacientes que los empleados trabajen bajo esas condiciones.

Segun un articulo del sitio web de la publicacion sobre enfermeria, NurseWeek, los enfermeros se enfrentan a algo conocido como "cansancio por alarma". Debido al exceso de alarmas y pitidos del equipo medico de supervision, los enfermeros dejan de prestar atencion de forma inconsciente a estos sonidos, lo cual supone un riesgo para los pacientes.

Combinado con la falta de sueno, el cansancio por alarma aumenta las probabilidades de proporcionar una medicacion erronea, y de cometer errores en el diagnostico y negligencias en hospitales y hogares de ancianos.

Un estudio sobre el sector de salud realizado en 2008 demostro que, cada ano, se producen 1,5 millones de errores medicos cuantificables. Ademas de las lesiones, los errores medicos acaban con la vida de 98 000 personas al ano, segun el Institute of Medicine.
