The event, also known as Hari Merdeka and Independence Day, is held every year on August 31st to commemorate the end of British colonial rule and the birth of modern Malaysia.
Independence was officially achieved on August 31st 1957, when power was formally handed over to the Federation of Malaya and the new national flag was raised in Kuala Lumpur.
