WILMINGTON, NC, September 01, 2011 (Press-News.org) Wilmington Animal Fitness & Rehabilitation Center at Needham Animal Hospital, in Wilmington, North Carolina, geared toward providing physical therapy and rehabilitation for dogs and cats recovering from surgery, injury, and other debilating events, has officially opened its doors to meet the growing needs of the community. Dianne Logan, Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT), Certified Canine Rehabilitation Practitioner (CCRP) of Wilmington Animal Fitness and Rehabilitation Center, received her training from the world-renowned, CCRP program at the University of Tennessee under the tutelage of veterinarians and physical therapists considered to be at the forefront of this emerging field of veterinary medicine.
"Physical therapy and rehabilitation are a new specialty in veterinary medicine that has grown tremendously over the last decade. Post-surgical patients, on average, improve 50% faster than patients without rehabilitation," indicated Logan. Treatment involves a patient specific regimen of modalities and exercises, balance training, use of therapeutic laser, and use of prosthetics or assistive devices.
The appreciation from the local community from the addition of such a service is not easily missed. Alice Kearney of Myrtle Beach, SC states, "In July, 2010, my little dachshund, Duke, had back surgery and he was not able to walk for eight months. I went everywhere to find help for him and on March 31, 2011, I found Dianne Logan at Wilmington Animal Fitness & Rehabilitation Center. Now, Duke is walking after four weeks and 12 treatments!"
Dianne Logan added that, "The success of any animal physical therapy or fitness program relies heavily on owner education and compliance. It is my goal as a healthcare practitioner to involve the owner every step of the way during the rehab process." The commitment to service and detail is clearly one of strongest attributes possessed by the staff at Wilmington Animal Fitness & Rehabilitation Center.
Wilmington Animal Fitness & Rehabilitation Center offers its rehabilitation/physical therapy services only on a referral basis. In order for pets to receive treatment, owners must ask their veterinarian to complete a patient referral form on their behalf. Patients will be rehabilitated according to an individual treatment plan designed by Dianne Logan, RVT, CCRP and agreed upon by the pet's owner and veterinarian.
Physical therapy is not only appropriate to facilitate recovery post-surgery, but in certain circumstances can be a viable alternative to surgery. Some of the benefits of physical therapy include: minimizing pain to restore patient's quality of life, improving balance and coordination, improving circulation to accelerate healing, and decreasing inflammation.
Wilmington Animal Fitness and Rehabilitation Center is located at Needham Animal Hospital in Wilmington, NC and was established by Dianne Logan to meet the needs of a growing community that possesses an affinity for their animals. Her experience in physical therapy of animals and passion to help those in need will prove to be a great asset to pet owners throughout the neighboring counties.
