Surge Protection Added to CPN Range as Fitting Becomes Mandatory in new Wiring Regulations

Cudis, distributors of consumer units and circuit breakers, has added Dehn surge protectors to its product range.

2011-10-06
BURY, ENGLAND, October 05, 2011 (Press-News.org) A change to the wiring regulations applicable for January 2012 will require surge protection to be fitted to all new domestic and light commercial electrical installations. Cudis, distributors of the CPN range of consumer units and miniature circuit breakers, has responded by adding Dehn surge protectors, from Germany to its product range.

The devices provide protection from all externally generated voltage surges, spikes and other transients by ensuring their safe diversion to earth. In addition to new systems, Cudis strongly recommends surge protection as a simple and common sense upgrade to existing electrical systems.

Voltage surges can occur for many reasons. Lightning strike is the most obvious and dramatic cause of voltage surge that will overwhelm and destroy the consumer unit and wreak havoc with the entire electrical system and its appliances. Thankfully, these strikes are rare. More commonly dips and surges in supply voltage are caused by load switching at sub-stations in the distribution network itself or because powerful equipment is switched on or off by industrial users.

A spike is an overvoltage that lasts less than three nano-seconds and a surge anything that lasts three nano-seconds or longer. Transient surges and spikes often go unnoticed, but they can have a damaging effect on the components in sensitive electronic equipment such as telecoms and broadband installations, computers, games consoles, high spec TV's and audio equipment. The householder may not notice the immediate effect, but transients will age the ultrasensitive components leading eventually to premature failure.

"Dehn is a family owned company specialising over several decades in electrical protection, building a sound industry reputation in the process," explained Cudis sales director, Mike Hankins. "The surge protectors that we are recommending will protect the complete house circuit from externally generated transients. Voltage variation problems can also arise in the home when kettles, electric showers, dryers and similar high power appliances are switched on and off. Fortunately, we also offer protected sockets under the CPN brand that can eliminate this localised hazard."

Cudis has the surge protectors in stock now and has a national network of fully briefed and trained distributors ready to provide service.
