San Antonio Chooses KAI Texas for High School Renovation/Addition

KAI Texas heads major renovations and additions to San Antonio's Sam Houston High School.

2011-10-06
DALLAS, TX, October 05, 2011 (Press-News.org) KAI Texas has been chosen as the architect for major renovations and additions to Sam Houston High School in San Antonio, TX, a high school within the San Antonio Independent School District. Sam Houston will receive a total of $16.9 million of major renovations funded by bond 2010. The project is currently in the planning phase and construction is expected to be complete by late 2014.

"Our relationships with ISD's throughout Texas mean so much to us," says KAI Texas' President and COO Darren L. James, AIA. "Serving the San Antonio Independent School District gives us a new opportunity to support excellent education by designing a high-quality learning environment. Designing learning environments that support structured and non-structured instruction is our passion. We have found that students and staff interact with the campus surroundings in creative ways that enhance their education."

Improvements to Sam Houston High School will include the following:
• Create a "New Tech High" school-within-a-school program at Sam Houston High School
• Create collaborative learning environments throughout the campus
• Update major systems, such as fire, emergency, security, lighting, and alarm
• Integrate sustainable technology into building renovations
• Educational spaces that support the new and expanded programs for the Sam Houston High School
• Develop a comprehensive approach that reinforces the history and pride of students
• Design space that enhance student learning environments

These upgrades are possible because of a $515 million bond issue that the voters passed in November, 2010. The bond funding will provide renovations and enhancements throughout the school district. According to the school district's web site, some buildings in SAISD are more than 100 years old and almost half are more than 50 years old.
