GOLDEN, CO, November 23, 2011 (Press-News.org) Come to the stylish bookstore and coffeehouse Read, Write, and Brew for an event for children and families celebrating the launch of Bridging the Book: Arthur Collins and the Three Wishes.
Bridging the Book is a newly-published companion to the young-adult novel Arthur Collins and the Three Wishes (http://arthurcollinsandthethreewishes.com), and a useful tool for teachers, parents, home school groups, and library programs that work to help kids love reading. Arthur Collins and the Three Wishes is the story of a ten-year-old boy from Colorado who is mysteriously transported to Great Britain just before the time of King Arthur, where he and the great wizard Merlin must thwart a plot against the young king-to-be.
Bridging the Book: Arthur Collins and the Three Wishes uses narration, role-playing, and readings from the book by an adult to guide children through the story's plot and help them follow the adventure.
Golden author Andi Pearson sees Bridging the Book's potential. "Reading about Arthur, role-playing the characters, interacting with adults to understand Arthur's dilemmas and resolutions are great ways to get young readers engaged with fiction," says Pearson, who will introduce the author at the event. "Arthur has excitement in his life, and reading about him is fun."
"Bridging the Book helps kids discover the joy of reading, " says author Linda Pilkington. "Children who become avid readers allow their imaginations to pull them into the story."
The idea for Bridging the Book originated with the author's mission to help kids love reading for pleasure. "I've always suspected that even with well-meaning instruction, reading can turn into work at school," says Pilkington. "And kids who never see the fun in books aren't likely to read for pleasure."
Inspired by the techniques her own elementary-school teacher used to encourage children to read, Linda created a format that condenses the book's plot into narration, recommends passages from the book to be read aloud to groups of children, and transforms dialogue from the book's characters into scenes that can be read or performed by students.
"Like a radio play, (the format) pairs music, narration, and performers reading or acting out scenes from the book," says Pilkington. "The audience becomes an important part of the performance."
