Fresno Water: Saving Water in One City

In a report in Business Review USA Martin Querin, Assistant Director of Public Utilities at Fresno Water talks about what the City of Fresno is doing to improve its water usage.

2012-01-11
CARLSBAD, CA, January 11, 2012 (Press-News.org) In a report in Business Review USA Martin Querin, Assistant Director of Public Utilities at Fresno Water talks about what the City of Fresno is doing to improve its water usage.

Underground Fresno consists of 88 percent groundwater with 1,780 miles of pipeline. The water production is provided by 271 municipal water wells and a 30 MGD Surface Water Treatment Facility. By 2025 the City will achieve balanced groundwater extraction.

Fresno Water's mission statement is, "We ensure our community has safe, reliable and affordable drinking water." And, in speaking with Fresno's Assistant Director of Public Utilities Martin Querin, he said he joined Fresno because he was proud of where the City was going with its water treatment and he wanted to be a part of the massive plan of attack to utilize and reduce the use of the City's water.

"I came here for this amazing plan (Metropolitan Water Resources Management Plan) to manage it for the next 50 years of growth," Querin says.

"In five years water is going to become even more critical, economics are going to become more critical and 30 percent of our pipeline is going to reach its service life," Querin says. "Fresno now has the opportunity to focus on fixing that and to make room for its needed strategic planning."

Fresno Water has the tools and resources now to develop and be prepared for the drastic changes that will happen. Querin wants the City of Fresno and surrounding areas to know, that everyone has to start thinking about the environment in terms of the resources and the availability of water that is going to be left.
