Western NSW Local Health District Delivers Healthcare to Patients Across Vast Distances with Technological Advancements

Across an area the size of Britain, Western New South Wales Local Health District brings healthcare to 260,000 people in regional cities, rural towns and remote locations.

2012-01-13
CARLSBAD, CA, January 13, 2012 (Press-News.org) Across an area the size of Britain, Western New South Wales Local Health District brings healthcare to 260,000 people in regional cities, rural towns and remote locations. Some people in the district live more than four hours' drive from the nearest hospital. Distance, remoteness and cultural diversity offer a rich working environment encouraging resilience, creativity and collaboration.

"We work really closely with the local mayors and the local council to ensure that our health services are supportive of that community," says Chief Executive Ron Dunham. "We have to be innovative around the way that we deliver services and connect remotely using technology. That's what makes us different; it's not what you get in a major city."

Good training and broad experience is even more important for bush practitioners, where anything can come through the door. Doctors working in rural towns are able to practice across the breadth of medicine if they want to, and some offer procedural skills, including obstetrics, general surgery and anaesthesia.

"We have the resources to work out how to deliver healthcare in the safest, most timely and appropriate way. We can deliver services that are as close to people's homes as possible and have a good standard of clinical quality," says Dr Randall Greenberg, director of critical care at Dubbo Base Hospital.

Although seemingly unrelated issues, the answers to these questions are linked. And in this month's issue of EARTH Magazine, scientists show that we may be closer to answering them than we think. He wanted a mass spectrometer that could measure the mass of common gases with extreme precision and sensitivity. Using ...
