RESTON, VA, February 08, 2012 (Press-News.org) Lab Rescue of the Labrador Retriever Club of the Potomac announced today it will hold a special adoption event for Labs eight or more years old from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 12, at the PetSmart store at 11860 Spectrum Center, Reston, Va.
Lab Rescue is holding this novel event because senior Labs are turning up in shelters faster than the group can find adopters and foster homes for them. This trend, which appears to be due in large part to the bad economy, may lead to an increase in healthy senior Labs being euthanized in the shelters.
To make it easier for people to adopt senior Labs, the group has temporarily reduced its adoption fee for Labs eight or more years old by 50 percent to $100.
"Older Labs can be delightful companions, just as full of personality as younger ones, but somewhat less 'hyper,'" says Lab Rescue volunteer Barbara Osgood of Fairfax, Va., who has adopted and fostered many senior Labs. "Older Labs like to play, but they are easily satisfied with brief periods of ball-throwing and rope-tugging. Older Labs like to walk, but they usually don't pull on the leash, and they are happy with a brief foray at a leisurely pace around the neighborhood or park. Older Labs like to sleep, and they'll be happy to be couch potatoes for most of the day unless you offer them something better to do."
Founded in 1991, Lab Rescue of the LRCP Inc. is a volunteer-driven, nonprofit organization that rescues, fosters and adopts more than 900 Labrador retrievers per year to approved applicants. The group serves Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and Washington, D.C., as well as adjacent parts of Pennsylvania, West Virginia and North Carolina. Labs available for adoption can be seen at www.lab-rescue.org.
