What is Liposuction?

Liposuction is among the most common and popular cosmetic surgeries performed in the United States.

2012-02-29
NEWPORT BEACH, CA, February 29, 2012 (Press-News.org) Liposuction is among the most common and popular cosmetic surgeries performed in the United States. With the use of a small tube called a cannula and gentle suction, liposuction is used to remove fat from certain areas of your body, including:

- Thighs
- Hips
- Waist
- Abdomen
- Buttocks
- Flanks
- Back
- Breasts (both male and female)
- Arms
- Neck and face

To perform liposuction, your cosmetic surgeon will make a small incision in the area to be treated. Through this incision a cannula is inserted. A cannula is a thin, rod-like instrument used to break apart fat cells. Gentle suction is used to remove the fat.

There are a number of types of liposuction, including ultrasonic liposuction, in which high-frequency sound waves are used to break up fat deposits prior to removal. This and other advancements in liposuction technology allow your cosmetic surgeon to make smaller incisions and more precisely remove excess fat from your body.

What Liposuction is Not
Liposuction is a body contouring procedure. Liposuction is not a weight loss solution. Even with strict dieting and exercising, you may notice several stubborn deposits of fat that do not respond to your healthy lifestyle. These can accumulate despite your best efforts, and require assistance to remove.

Good candidates for liposuction should be within 10 to 20 pounds of their goal weight. If you are trying to lose a significant amount of weight, a surgical procedure such as gastric bypass surgery may be a better option. Only about 10 pounds of fat can safely be removed from any area of your body with liposuction. This may seem like a lot, but the truth is removing 10 pounds of fat may result in only negligible weight loss.

Liposuction should be used to complement and accentuate the efforts you have already made to tone and firm your frame. It should not be seen as a method to drop several pounds. However, after you have lost substantial weight, liposuction can be used to further enhance and sculpt your body, providing you with a toned, firm, appealing appearance.

If you are interested in liposuction, you should schedule a consultation with an experienced cosmetic surgeon in your area. Take time to ask questions about the techniques offered and what type of results you can expect. Feel free to consult with several surgeons before choosing one to perform your procedure.

If you live in or around Newport Beach or Glendale, California and would like more information about liposuction, please visit the website of experienced plastic surgeon Eugene Kim, M.D. to learn more at www.ekimplasticsurgery.com.
