BERLIN, GERMANY, February 29, 2012 (Press-News.org) MaerzMusik, Berlin's annual festival of contemporary classical music, is known for celebrating innovative and experimental artists.
This year's event is due to run in the German capital from Saturday March 17th to Sunday March 25th, with a special focus placed on the work of John Cage and Wolfgang Rihm.
According to the organisers, the two composers can be viewed as "poles of a contemporary musical cosmos". This year marks the 20th anniversary of Cage's death and Rihm will celebrate his 60th birthday in March.
MaerzMusik will use a series of events taking place under the Cage and Consequences banner to explore the American composer's groundbreaking work and legacy.
Elsewhere, the spotlight will be placed on Rihm - a prolific and highly versatile composer from Germany whose work aspires to "the highest expressiveness and subjectivity", according to the festival organisers.
He is due to take part in several concerts during MaerzMusik, including an event at the Philharmonie on Thursday March 22nd.
In this recital, one of Rihm's works will be contrasted with music by Morton Feldman and Christian Wolff, who are considered to be among Cage's kindred spirits in the American avant-garde tradition.
Tickets for MaerzMusik events are individually priced and available online.
