Hofmann Engineering's Success Defies Industry Adversity Reported in February's Manufacturing Digital

SAN DIEGO, CA, February 29, 2012 (Press-News.org) In search of a change of pace, German-born brothers John and Erich F Hofmann arrived in Fremantle in 1959 with no presumption that they would go on to establish a world renowned manufacturing company. Hofmann Engineering's humble beginnings sprouted in the family's Dianella backyard in 1969, and over the ensuing decades, the company - now run by its second and third generations - has become one of Western Australia's largest family-run businesses.

While the mining boom has produced a lot of manufacturing business for the company throughout WA, the industry as a whole is a tough place to be. "At the moment, particularly for manufacturing, it's the toughest it has ever been in Australia," Managing Director Erich J Hofmann, of the second generation, recently told The West Australian. "We're lucky we've got that size; we have a good reputation; we have exports."

The Bassendean, WA-based company fared quite well through the global financial crisis, doubling in size and expanding its operations across Australia, as well as the world. In Victoria, Hofmann Engineering acquired two new business opportunities: at Melbourne-based Metaltec Precision International, where the team will manufacture components for the Joint Strike Fighter Program; and in Bendigo, where the company purchased a distressed ordinance factory that was once the largest machine shop for the Australian Defence Industries.
