East Meets Westchester: Asian and European Art to Headline at Clark Auction for Asia Week NY on March 18th, 2012
2012-03-14
LARCHMONT, NY, March 14, 2012 (Press-News.org) Clarke Auction's upcoming March 18th sale will feature 450+ lots from estates in the Tristate area, Pennsylvania, and an art storage warehouse that yielded some 100 additional lots of extraordinary and rare oil paintings. The 100 lots acquired from the storage warehouse will be auctioned off separately, immediately after the initial auction has ended at 6:00pm.

In recognition of Asia Week 2012 in New York City, Clarke Auction has a special selection of fine Asian work in its inital auction, at 2:00pm on March 18th. The Chinese art selections will feature an intricate Jade vase, a full size room Chinese carpet, a bronze sculpture of a warrior, a Famille Verte Export bowl, two carved hard stone plaques, a jade and brass inkwell, two Chinese hardwood carved chairs, and some fascinating ivory carved vessels and figures. The figures include an intricately carved vessel adorned with dragons and foo dogs, a seated emperor holding a gift on a wood stand, and a reclining Chinese figure on a wood stand. From the Japanese selection, there is a magnificent mixed media work by contemporary artist Yayoi Kasuama, entitled "Autumn Evening" which is styled with watercolor and spray paint on paper. The work has Kasuama's signature verso with its original price tag of $15,000. The auction price does not reflect the original price.

The Decorative Art selections include 3 lots of stunning life-sized signed bronzes, marked "Houdan" and "H. Rouard Fondeur" on the base. All three pieces are of superior quality and condition from an Oyster Bay, Long Island estate. A 17th Century Tapestry of a lion and his prey is also featured in the sale from the same estate.

The Fine Art selection in the upcoming sale will feature a signed, 1961, oil and sand on Masonite, by Egyptian artist, Omar El Nagdi, entitled "Le Menestral". Three paintings by French artist Charles Levier, to be sold individually, are also featured. Other selections include two lots from Italian artist Guido Trentini dated 1927 and 1929, and one lot from Italian artist Pio Salerno. All three Italian lots are beautifully painted landscapes and appear to be in good condition. A WPA style painting by the rare American Female artist, Sally Haley, is also generating some significant interest. Two oil landscapes by Eugene Speicher, and an amazing optical oil by Puerto Rican color and contrast expert, Paul Camacho, will also be sold.

The Furniture selections also include some rare pieces. There is an early Eames lounge chair and ottoman, a Horst Bruning leather day bed, two Paul McCobb chests, and the rare and highly sought after "cityscape" desk and "cityscape" credenza by Paul Evans. The Evans' twin pedestal desk is made of burl walnut with seven drawers and mirrored chrome. The "cityscape" cabinet is also burl walnut and displays matte chrome. Both Evans' pieces came from the same New Rochelle estate and are in fantastic condition.

The upcoming sale will also feature an extensive amount of silver, including a fine Mexican Tea Set, Tiffany Flatware, and a Tiffany reticulated silver bowl. The Mexican Tea set includes a Coffee Pot, creamer, open bowl, sugar, and server, weighing approximately 173 troy ounces as a set. Also for sale is an accompanying Mexican silver "Joyerian Reel" jug, weighing approximately 36 troy ounces. The tea set and jug were both consigned from a Park Avenue estate. Additional highlights among the silver lots are a 7 troy ounce sterling cup and saucer by Gustav Klingert, and other beautiful silver pieces.

Onsite Previews will be held Saturday March 17th from 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm, and during the sale on March 18th from 12:00pm to 6:00pm at 2372 Boston Post Road, Larchmont, NY 10538. Clarke's full catalogue can be viewed at www.ClarkeNY.com
