One of a kind Spy-Themed Children's Camp Designed to Quell Spring Fever

Disabilities advocate organizes all-inclusive children's activity camp.

2012-03-14
EDMONTON, AB, March 14, 2012 (Press-News.org) With yet another fresh dump of snow, not to mention having been cooped up through these long winter months, it's little wonder that kids are starting to get a little stir-crazy. The snow and cold can make that confinement especially difficult for children facing the challenges presented by a disability. It's in this spirit that author and artist Alison Neuman has brought back her popular spring camp, Camp Mission Access and help treat cure that spring fever bug.

In its second year, the camp has been specifically designed by Neuman to excite and inspire all children aged 8-12 and to challenge them intellectually and creatively. But while many children's camps focus exclusively on either children with disabilities or those without them, this Camp takes a different approach—one that includes all children.

"Growing up as someone who was differently-abled, I know only too well how many camp activities—both for children with disabilities and those without—end up excluding children in one way or another," says Neuman, who has been organizing the camp since its inception. "So rather than segregating children in any way, we've designed a program that includes all children—whether they have a disability or not. We tailor our curriculum to include any and all kids who an interest in embracing their 'inner spy'."

The spy-themed camp revolves around the completion of three 'missions' designed to appeal to a wide variety of children's interests:
- a writing and imagination session with Neuman, the author of Ice Rose, a young adult spy novel featuring a differently-abled female protagonist;
- teamwork and problem-solving challenges hosted by Kazoodles, an Edmonton-based children's musical theatre group;
- and a movement and dance workshop presented by iDANCE, the Edmonton dance company that focuses on accessibility and inclusiveness in dance.
