CHICAGO, IL, September 26, 2010 (Press-News.org) In an effort to better serve the blind and visually impaired community as well as offer hope to members of the massive baby boom generation experiencing vision loss in the years ahead, The Chicago Lighthouse is unveiling a new building addition on September 29th that will offer world class amenities.
The expanded facility at the Lighthouse's current headquarters building at 1850 W. Roosevelt Road will have an additional 12,000 square feet enabling the 104 year old agency to expand current programs and introduce new ones.
Highlights include an enlarged low vision clinic, which is already regarded as the most prominent in the U.S.; a new state-of-the-art "Tools for Living" retail store that promises an unparalleled shopping experience for customers who are blind or visually impaired; a nationally acclaimed legal clinic that has seen its space more than doubled; a world renowned employment services program; and the addition of Dr. Gerald Fishman, a world-renowned ophthalmologist, researcher and academic specializing in inherited retinal diseases who has relocated his practice to the Lighthouse.
"We are absolutely thrilled to be able to announce the successful completion of this building expansion and rehabilitation project," said Dr. Janet Szlyk, Lighthouse President and Executive Director. "Thanks to the generosity and support of so many outstanding donors, we are embarking on a new course that is establishing the Lighthouse as a global authority on vision care."
