Since its inception in 1984, L-3 Nautronix has established itself as a true global leader in the maritime manufacturing and defence sectors, supplying through-water communications, portable tracking devices, navigation tools and geospatial support systems to Australian and international maritime customers.

Nautronix was originally founded just south of Perth in Fremantle, Western Australia to satisfy a niche oil and gas industry requirement: establishing offshore acoustic control and undersea positioning systems just off the west coast. The young company grew quickly, listing on the WA Stock Exchange and acquiring other companies such as California-based MariPro that would strengthen the business by incorporating additional specialties - in this case, undersea cabling.

The mid-1990s proved to be a turning point for Nautronix when the company realised their acoustic systems would be beneficial within the naval defence sector, handling underwater noise measurements and facilitating communication between submarines. Within just a few years, the government and defence sector of the business became their primary area of focus. More than 70 per cent of their global turnover could be attributed to their naval defence efforts.
