CEDAR RAPIDS, IA, May 02, 2012 (Press-News.org) Starting this month, Advanced Waste Services Iowa Division will be able to provide beneficial reuse of non hazardous industrial sludge as a landfill alternative daily cover, or ADC.
The beneficial re-use of sludge as an ADC is helping manufacturers enhance sustainability and waste minimization goals by diverting millions of tons of precious dirt and earthen resources from landfills.
Landfill operators must cover disposed solid waste at the end of each operating day with an earthen material. This requirement assists in the disease prevention, odor control, ground water protection, fire prevention and litter control.
Traditionally, non hazardous sludge from manufacturing operations goes to the landfill as waste. This has created problems for businesses that strive to enhance sustainability goals. Advanced Waste Services is helping to solve this problem for manufacturers.
Advanced Waste Services recently installed a solidification pit at its Cedar Rapids, IA wastewater treatment plant to convert non hazardous industrial sludge into alternative daily cover (ADC) for landfill. If the sludge meets ADC requirements and is beneficially reused, the savings in dirt hauling costs and reduction in carbon emissions are significant.
"The solidification pit addition to Advanced Waste Services Iowa is our commitment to helping our clients enhance sustainability and waste minimization goals," says Mark Lob, Operations Manager for Advanced Waste Services, Inc. "Eastern Iowa needs growth and our focus in eliminating risks and wastes of all kinds is very important in attracting sustainable manufacturers to our state."
