Bicyclist accidents in California are preventable through conscientious effort on the part of the cyclists and motorists who share the road.

For many people in California, riding their bikes is a way of life. It is a way to get to work or spend leisure time, but though it can be fun, it can also be dangerous.Unfortunately, bicyclists do not have much of the protection that many motorists do, such as the protection of the vehicle itself in to safety devices like air bags and seatbelts. Safe riding practices may prevent some accidents involving a bicycle; however, in many circumstances there is little a bicyclist can do to prevent an accident.
There are many different risks and accident causes that California bicyclists might encounter on a routine outing. Some collisions are the fault of the bicyclist and some are the fault of another vehicle. The most prevalent type of crash involves a motor vehicle making an unsafe turn and striking a cyclist. Other accidents involve unsafe speed by either the bicyclist or another vehicle on the road, and others involve vehicles that run red lights and strike a bicyclist. The most dangerous time for these types of collisions seems to be in the early morning hours or evening when visibility is poorest.
Many dangerous bicycle accidents may be preventable. In order to stay safe on the roadways, bicyclists should obey traffic laws and wear reflective clothing to make themselves more visible to other traffic on the road. Another preventable measure is to maintain the bike in good condition. A well-maintained bicycle means that there will be a reduced rate of mechanical failure which could lead to an accident.
Motorists also need to take necessary precautions when operating a vehicle to avoid car versus bicycle accidents. All drivers should follow safe driving procedures and be conscious of other people on the roadway. Not all accidents are preventable, but following traffic rules and safety precautions could be the difference between being involved in a serious accident and avoiding one.
If you are injured in an accident, consult with a personal injury lawyer experienced with bicycle accidents. You may be entitled to compensation for your injuries.
