What Can Our Aging Population Do To Combat the Effects Dry Mouth?

According to Livestrong.com, approximately 1 and 4 adults are at risk for dry mouth, a condition that can make it difficult to swallow food, speak and taste.

2012-07-03
NEWPORT BEACH, CA, July 03, 2012 (Press-News.org) The number of people who suffer from dry mouth in America is shocking. Livestrong.com a popular health website, states that more than 25 percent of the adult population could be suffering from this condition. As we age our bodies generally break down and dry mouth can become a problem for some causing dental concerns.

What is Dry Mouth?

Dry mouth is a condition that occurs when the salivary glands are not producing saliva. This can cause a number of problems for people who suffer dry mouth conditions. The simple things we take for granted such as tasting, swallowing or even speaking can become difficult.

Importance of Salvia

Saliva is an important element of our mouth. It helps to digest, makes it possible to chew and swallow food and is a natural mouth cleanser. Our saliva also helps to wash away food that could otherwise end up caught in your teeth.

Causes of Dry Mouth

Dry mouth can be caused by medications that help with depression, high blood pressure, parkinson's disease, diabetes and other prescriptions.

Improving Dry Mouth

Dry mouth can be improved by making some changes. If you are taking medication that is casing dry mouth you may want to speak with your doctor to find out if there are alternative prescriptions or smaller doses. This may or may not improve dry mouth conditions. If this method doesn't improve there are a few other methods that may help such as the following.

1. Avoid mouth washes that have peroxide or alcohol as an ingredient.
2. Drink water frequently
3. Suck on sugar-free hard candies
4. Eat foods that contain sauce, broth, gravy, butter or similar ingredients that can help moisten your foods

People who do have dry mouth should also make sure they are taking care of their teeth to ensure that they do not suffer from gum disease or tooth decay. To ensure you are properly caring for your teeth, YourOrangeCountyDentist.com suggests brushing twice a day, flossing and using toothpaste that contains fluoride.
