Dexter Industries' dWifi Sensor Now Controls NXT Robots through Webpages

Dexter Industries Releases Websockets for LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT.

2012-07-12
WASHINGTON, DC, July 12, 2012 (Press-News.org) After months of software and hardware development, Dexter Industries releases the much anticipated websockets control of the LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT system.

This week Dexter Industries releases software for controlling NXT robots through webpages using the websocket protocol. The software allows users to control robots directly through most popular web browsers, such as Google Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Opera, and others. Robots can be controlled by Apple devices such as the iPad, iPhone, Macbook, and the Android phone operating system. Previously, these devices were not able to control the LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT. This is the first time users will be able to control their NXT robots through their mobile devices wirelessly. With the new software released by Dexter Industries, users of the popular robot-building kit are able to control the system with any device with a web browser.

To show the power of their new software, Dexter Industries has released two example programs for using websockets with RobotC. The first example sends information back and forth between a webpage and the LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT. A user is able to send simple messages from the web browser to the robot. In turn, the robot sends messages such as sensor data and motor position back to the web browser.

The second example allows users to control a robot from a webpage in real time. This example program allows users to control a robot over the Internet in real time, and receive sensor information from the robot in real time. Because the robot is dynamically controlled by a webpage, it can be controlled from a browser on a laptop, computer, smart-phone, or tablet device.

The Dexter Industries WiFi Sensor connects the LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT to the Internet and other wireless devices as well. The sensor can communicate information to LEGO robots, web browsers, and even popular websites, such as Twitter.
