RALEIGH, NC, July 15, 2012 (Press-News.org) William Peace University (http://www.peace.edu), a private four-year university located in downtown Raleigh, has announced that it was selected by the White House Business Council and Business Forward North Carolina to host a roundtable discussion on the challenges facing higher education in the Triangle with U.S. Deputy Secretary of Education Tony Miller on campus July 12 at the Main Building. The forum included local business leaders and higher education leaders discussing what tools are needed from the government in order to make higher education accessible. The focus was on educational improvements needed to develop an effective labor force that will keep the community competitive in the future employment market. Among specific topics discussed were ways to work with local businesses to involve students in local employment, the need for the best school leaders to serve students with the most pressing learning needs for the future success of society, and the value of having a post-secondary degree in today's job market.
Debra M. Townsley, Ph.D., president of William Peace University, who previously took part in a White House Business Council-Business Forward North Carolina discussion on education at the White House on Jan. 12, participated in the roundtable along with representatives from other colleges, universities and research institutions. Business leaders from local companies and education groups rounded out the panel for the invitation-only event, which reflected the university's commitment to putting the overwhelming majority of its students into the workforce within a year of their graduation.
QUOTES:
"The Triangle is known nationally for its appreciation and cultivation of higher learning, and William Peace University was pleased to host this discussion to uncover what steps are needed to maintain educational excellence in this arena moving forward," said Townsley. "We are honored that Secretary Miller joined us in an insightful review of the issues we are facing locally and the ways we can accommodate them and become stronger providers of educational resources for the community in the coming years."
