PALO ALTO, CA, July 18, 2012 (Press-News.org) Breast implants are safer now than ever, says Dr. Daryl K. Hoffman, who practices plastic surgery near San Jose.
"The materials and techniques in use today are incredibly advanced," says Dr. Hoffman, a board-certified plastic surgeon who specializes in procedures such as breast augmentation. "San Jose and Palo Alto women sometimes express concerns about breast implants during their initial consultations with me. I want them to know that implant components have undergone extensive clinical testing and have long been deemed safe for the human body."
Dr. Hoffman's comments come in response to the recent report released by the United Kingdom's National Health Service (NHS) reassuring the public of the lack of toxicity associated with PIP breast implants, produced by the French Poly Implant Prosthese. The NHS report, which came at the heels of public concerns centering on the silicone contained in PIP implants, concluded that the materials in the implants are in fact non-toxic.
A Stanford-educated surgeon, Dr. Hoffman says he takes extra care to counsel his patients through the involved process of deciding on breast implants. In the San Jose area, we have a highly educated and informed public that, despite the favorable outlook in local culture regarding this type of procedure, will naturally have questions and some doubts," he says. "Above all, I reassure my patients of my complete confidence in the implant materials available today."
Of the two most common fillers, silicone gel implants more closely duplicate a natural breast in both feel and look than do those containing saline solution, Dr. Hoffman says, adding that silicone implants remain intact even when their shell becomes compromised.
"Even so," he says, "just to be safe, women with silicone implants should make sure they follow the instructions of the FDA, the implant manufacturer, and their physicians for follow up screening and care."
Dr. Daryl Hoffman is a board-certified plastic surgeon serving the San Jose area. In private practice since 1991, Dr. Hoffman completed his medical education at University of New Mexico School of Medicine, his residency at Stanford University, a fellowship in cosmetic surgery at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach and a fellowship in hand surgery and microsurgery at San Jose Medical Center. He performs surgical and non-surgical procedures for the face, breasts and body.
