JACKSON, MI, July 21, 2012 (Press-News.org) This summer, Dr. Constance Smith, Jackson family dentist, helps parents to refresh their knowledge of proper dental care for their children. A child's baby teeth are important, as children need strong, healthy teeth to chew their food, speak and have a good-looking smile. Even before teeth appear, Dr. Smith informs parents that they can clean their child's gums with a soft, damp washcloth after each feeding. As soon as the first baby tooth appears, parents can also begin brushing their child's teeth twice a day using a soft-bristled children's toothbrush.
"If a baby tooth is lost too early, the teeth beside it may drift into the empty space. When it is time for the adult teeth to come in, there may not be enough room, which can make the teeth crooked or crowded. Starting infants off with good oral care can help protect their teeth for decades to come," said Dr. Constance Smith, family dentist in Jackson.
As soon as a child's first tooth appears, they are at risk for decay, which is often referred to as Baby Bottle Tooth Decay or Early Childhood Caries (cavities) in infants and toddlers. This can occur most often in the upper front teeth, but other teeth can be affected as well. In more severe, unfortunate cases, infants and toddlers can experience decay so severe that the teeth cannot be repaired and need to be removed. The good news is: Tooth decay is preventable!
With proper oral hygiene maintenance, Dr. Smith, Jackson dentist, informs parents that they can help prevent tooth decay from occurring in their children. Until a child is about 8 years old, or until they can show that they can do a good job on their own, parents should continue to help children brush their teeth twice a day.
Dr. Constance Smith, dentist in Jackson, encourages children to brush their teeth after breakfast and before bed to help keep their teeth free of food particles, especially the molars. Food particles have been known to hide in the little grooves and crevices of the molars, using food for bacteria. Dr. Smith, cosmetic dentist in Jackson, can also put sealants on a child's molars to protect them from decay. However, it is still very important to brush and floss regularly.
