The Two Types of Stains That Cause Tooth Discoloration

2012-07-28
SACRAMENTO, CA, July 28, 2012 (Press-News.org) Tooth discoloration may be caused by extrinsic (external) or intrinsic (internal) staining. While both types of stains can significantly discolor your teeth, the tooth whitening options for improving their appearance may be very different.

External Tooth Discoloration

External staining is any stain on the outer surface of your teeth. These stains may be caused by:
- Dark colored food and beverages
- Sugary foods and drinks, including sports drinks
- Tobacco products
- Every day wear and tear

External stains can be controlled with the use of mildly abrasive toothpaste, such as one containing baking soda. Stains on the outer layer of your teeth can also be reduced through biannual visits to your dentist for cleanings and examinations.

A professional solution such as in-office tooth whitening or a take-home kit from your dentist can also significantly improve the appearance of external staining.

Internal Tooth Discoloration

Stains underneath the enamel on your teeth may be caused by:
- Fluoride or mineralization in water
- Medications
- Trauma
- Aging

Unlike external stains, those underneath your enamel cannot be dealt with through brushing or biannual in-office cleanings. Some people have had success treating internal stains thorough continuous use of professional take-home whitening kits, but other cosmetic options may prove more effective.

One of the best ways to improve the appearance of teeth with internal staining is through porcelain veneers. Placed over the front of your teeth, veneers can be shaded to match adjacent teeth that do not have staining, producing a seamless and entirely natural appearance.

Under the care of a cosmetic dentist, it is possible to combine porcelain veneers and other tooth whitening options to achieve a brilliantly white smile no matter what type of stains are impacting your teeth.

If you live in or around Sacramento, Roseville, Rocklin, Folsom, or Citrus Heights, California and would like to learn more about your professional teeth whitening options or porcelain veneers, please visit the website of Advanced Dental Concepts for additional information at www.hightechsmiles.com.

BOTOX stops these muscle contractions by preventing neurons from releasing a compound called acetylcholine. Under ...

Teeth Health and Your Environment

2012-07-28
The health of your teeth, like the health of your body, can be affected by environmental factors. For example, the World Health Organization has found that in areas where water is not treated with fluoride, tooth decay, cavities, and tooth loss are much more prevalent. However, teeth health and your environment exceed simple water treatment to include choices that can be influenced by your community and things you are exposed to on a daily basis. Environmental Factors Environment is largely used in its ecological sense as a catch-all for water, air, and soil. However, ...

Microdermabrasion is a non-surgical way to rejuvenate and refresh your skin. There are two microdermabrasion techniques. One method sprays a steady stream ...

2012-07-28
Missing teeth can lead to a variety of oral health issues if they are not replaced. Partial dentures are an excellent and cost effective solution if you need to replace multiple missing teeth. At your initial ...

Rights of DUI Victims

Breast Implant Manufacturers

2012-07-28
In the U.S., only a few different companies manufacture and produce breast implants. Part of the reason for this is because the breast implant industry is extremely competitive. Over time, any smaller manufacturers that try to come into play get bought out by the larger companies. If you are getting a breast augmentation in America, your breast implants will come from one of three companies: - Allergan, Inc. - Formerly called Inamed Aesthetic and McGhan Medical, Allergan creates breast implants that go by the brand name Natrelle. - Mentor Corporation - Located in Santa ...
