TYNGSBORO, MA, August 01, 2012 (Press-News.org) Mark Parlee, owner of Parlee Farms in Tyngsboro, Massachusetts, was recently featured in a "Gardening with Gutner" segment on Boston's WBZ news. The focus of the segment was on pick your own fruit in Massachusetts and the quality of local crops this season.
"It's always great to have Todd Gutner and the WBZ news team here at the farm. We were able to showcase the fruits that we have available for pick your own during the current picking season," said Mark Parlee.
After the unusual New England winter and spring, Parlee Farms was fortunate that their strawberry, blueberry and peach crops have all come in nicely for the 2012 picking season. Due to the warm weather, Parlee Farms has seen the biggest and earliest blueberry season at the farm, which offers pick your own blueberries near Boston MA. During the WBZ News segment, Mark Parlee explains what makes the perfect blueberry. The critical thing to understand about blueberry picking is that the blueberries should not be picked as soon as they turn blue. In order to pick a sweet blueberry, it is necessary to let the berry continue to hang on the bush for 8-10 days after they have turned blue. At Parlee Farms, the eight-acre blueberry field is covered with netting in order to keep the birds away.
Parlee Farms, a Boston MA area apple picking orchard, is in good shape for apple picking season. With the help of occasional rain and constant irrigation, the apples are shaping up nicely. Although there was some loss due to the freeze in early April, most varieties will be available including the very popular Honeycrisp, Macoun, and Jonagold.
In addition to pick your own fruit, the Farmstand at Parlee Farms offers current crops that are fresh picked and ready for visitors to take home from June through October. Mary's Country Kitchen and Bakery at Parlee Farms offers tasty treats related to each picking season as well as ice cream and the fall favorite Apple Cider Donuts. Most of the bakery items are made from scratch in small batches. Annie's Animal Barns is another popular attraction at Parlee Farms, which has two barns filled with over 60 young farm animals to feed and pet.
