OLATHE, KS, August 03, 2012 (Press-News.org) You've done all your planning, purchased all your toiletries and linens and you think you are ready to send your child off to school. But did you think about the mattress he would sleep on? Of course, this may be provided by the dorm, but it is often a cheap mattress that is lumpy and worn. Wouldn't you feel better knowing that your child is getting the rest he needs to keep up with his demanding schedule?
Due to the unique situation of living in a dormitory, you should take a few things into consideration before purchasing a dorm mattress:
- Consider the space! Since dorm rooms are notoriously small that makes space a premium for your student. Some rooms include permanent frames or desks that fill a significant amount of available floor space. It won't do you any good to purchase a new mattress if it won't fit in the room! Visit your child's dorm to get accurate measurements of the room and identify space restrictions.
- Determine the size! Now it is time to consider what size your dorm mattress should be. Check for and measure any permanent frames or foundations in the dorm room. Twin and Twin XL mattresses are the typical size used in dorm facilities. A twin xl mattress is longer than a traditional twin mattress, which makes it the appropriate choice for taller students as well as those who just want a little more "wiggle-room".
- Look for Specials! Late summer or early fall is a great time to visit your local mattress store. Look for a discount mattress store in your area to find a great deal on a twin, twin xl or full mattress! Don't be afraid to ask if they have a Back to School Mattress Sale or special. Because they operate with low overhead, a trip to one of these stores could save you hundreds on a dorm mattress!
- Consider the Mattress Type! There are so many more mattress options available to the consumer in today's market. Traditional innerspring mattresses continue to be popular because they are relatively inexpensive and are a great choice for those with a very tight budget. Memory foam mattresses are on the rise thanks to higher quality foam and reduced cost, and newer memory foam mattresses include gel-infused foam which helps disperse body heat. Latex mattresses are considered to be the most durable and comfortable mattress available in today's market. With all the choices today you don't have to settle on a cheap mattress! Visit a discount mattress store with your student and have him lay on one of each type to determine the best mattress for his comfort level and your budget.
- Don't Forget the Mattress Protector! Mattress protectors do more than just keep stains off your new mattress. They protect your child from the buildup of dust mites, bacteria, mold and mildew that may lurk in his dormitory. They also protect the mattress from bed bugs which can thrive in populated, high traffic areas--just like dormitories! Make sure you get a mattress protector that encases the entire mattress with a zippered closure for maximum protection.
Back to school mattress sales are now going on nationwide. Consider investing in a new dorm mattress for your child. Sending him to school with a new quality mattress will give you peace of mind knowing that he is getting a good night's sleep that allows him to greet the day well-rested and ready to tackle the new, exciting experience of college.
