ATLANTA, GA, August 05, 2012 (Press-News.org) Marlan Nichols, CPA, is assuming leadership as the new chairman of the Georgia Society of Certified Public Accountants (GSCPA) for a one-year term. In this role, Nichols, leads Georgia's premier professional organization for CPAs in the state. The Leadership Council elected him to his new position at its annual meeting.
Marlan has a lengthy record of service with The Georgia Society of CPAs. He joined the GSCPA in 1985 and over the past 27 years, his involvement with the GSCPA has crossed all areas of the organization. Marlan has served in leadership positions for his local GSCPA chapter, the Audit, Investment and CPE Committees and the Annual Convention Task Force. He has also served on the GSCPA Council and Board of Directors, leading him to his current post as chair.
"My involvement with the GSCPA has evolved way beyond what my initial expectations were," says Marlan.
During his term, Marlan will focus on many key initiatives. Advocacy and the Georgia State Board of Accountancy are at the top of his list. Regarding advocacy and legislative issues, Nichols says that The Georgia Society of CPAs plans to work closely with state and local elected officials during the upcoming session in 2013. The GSCPA prides itself on acting as a voice for the CPA profession in Georgia as well as advocating for the interests of its members, the public, the CPA profession and Georgia's business community before regulatory and legislative bodies.
"As CPAs, many of our members have proven to be valuable resources in the financial and tax issues of the state, and we plan to continue to enhance our presence by providing objective assistance to the state and local governments in the legislative arena, "says Marlan.
A common thread among Marlan's goals for the upcoming year is communication with the GSCPA membership. Marlan is no stranger to traveling the state of Georgia and plans to visit and engage members across the state through firm, company and chapter visits.
"Getting out among the members and letting them know we are interested in them and listening to them is vitally important," says Marlan. "It has become evident that making the GSCPA pertinent and showing we are working for them is the key to our success."
Marlan is actively involved with his community outside of the GSCPA. He is a past member of the Houston Healthcare Complex Board and the Kids Journey Board, a current member of the Warner Robins Rotary Club, treasurer of the Georgia Air Force Association and past chair of the Museum of Aviation Foundation.
Upon graduating from UGA, Marlan began his career in industry at Walton Electric Membership Corporation. In 1985 he changed his focus to public accounting and joined Hopkins, Nichols & Associates which would become Nichols, Cauley & Associates, LLC. Currently, Marlan is a senior partner at Nichols, Cauley & Associates, and he is also the managing partner of the firm's A&A practice in the Warner Robins office. He is a licensed CPA in Georgia, Florida and Alabama. Marlan and his wife, Janie, have three children and two grandchildren.
