Workplace Wellbeing and the Rise in Self-employment

As self-employment levels increase, awareness of workplace wellbeing continues to be important.

2012-08-23
GLASGOW, SCOTLAND, August 23, 2012 (Press-News.org) Recent figures show that despite economic challenges, self-employment is on the rise in the UK. With more people choosing to work for themselves either running their own business or doing freelance work, it's a good time to take a look at how self-employment can benefit people in terms of wellbeing.

People choose to go it alone for a variety of reasons. In some cases it's simply down to following a dream and implementing their entrepreneurial vision. In other cases someone might have been made redundant and are seeking a new way to use the skills they've built up during the time spent working for someone else.

The benefits of self-employment are many: by breaking out on your own, there's an increased sense of freedom as well as independence. And of course if you're self employed you are your own boss, meaning that you can choose your working hours, and plan your own day. Of course self-employment isn't all going to be easy and does present challenges - with no HR department or administrative support, you'll be responsible for all the things that need done until you're in a position to employ others.

And in terms of health and workplace wellbeing, there's the obvious challenge of time off. Getting self employed health insurance means that should you require any treatment that you're eligible for, then you'll be seen promptly and avoid waiting lists. Self employed cover doesn't need to be expensive either - you can buy the level of cover you require and make sure you're not paying for anything you don't need. Minimising your own sickness absence if you're self employed is a major priority, so it's good to have peace of mind that if you need treatment you'll have more control over when and where you're treated.
