Carlsbad Non-Profit, Independent Middle and Upper School Builds Off-Site Gymnasium for Fall/Winter Court Sports; Expands Coaching Staff with Diverse Backgrounds and Skill Sets

2010-10-06
CARLSBAD, CA, October 06, 2010 (Press-News.org) On the heels of a highly successful sports program last year, Pacific Ridge School, a non-profit, independent middle and upper school in Carlsbad, California, continues to meet the rising demands of its growing student population. In addition to earning the Frontier Leaguefs number one ranking in girls cross country and launching the inaugural boys and girls varsity lacrosse programs, the school also dedicated its new synthetic turf athletic field at the start of 2010. As Pacific Ridge School moves forward with the opening of a new, energy-efficient high school building this fall, it will also open a new 8,000 square foot, off-site gymnasium in the Bressi Ranch community of Carlsbad.

gWe felt we needed to have first-rate facilities in close proximity to our campus as we build our sports programs further and initiate construction of our permanent gym,h said Darren Lawlor, athletic director, Pacific Ridge School. gThe off-campus gym will be a great place to launch court sports, offer indoor physical education classes, and build a state-of-the-art weight room.h

Also expanding the athletics department are new coaches, new sports, and the schoolfs acceptance into a new, more competitive high school sports league. Pacific Ridge Schoolfs new sports offerings include: JV and varsity basketball for boys and girls, girls tennis in fall, boys tennis in spring, and co-ed golf in spring.

Pacific Ridge Schoolfs upper school competitive teams will also be transitioning from the Frontier League to the Coastal Conference, an elite conference in the state. gWe are very pleased and honored to be a part of the Coastal Conference organization,h noted Lawlor. Pacific Ridge Schoolfs middle school teams are part of the South Coast Middle School Athletic League.

Pacific Ridge Schoolfs coaching staff for the 2010-2011 academic year expanded to include a new boys head basketball coach, a strength and conditioning coach, a varsity volleyball coach and a health education program director.

gThe backgrounds of our coaches, from their volunteer experiences and collegiate careers, to their broad interests and vast education, exemplify the diversity in our athletic department,h stated Lawlor. gThese are not just coaches, but true mentors who have not just the experience, but the desire to coach and lead our students. Itfs of the utmost importance to provide our students with great coaches and role models; the facilities are just icing on the cake.h

Pacific Ridge School remains a proud partner of the Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA), one of the few schools in the country to commit to the principles of PCA. Lawlor continued, gOur creed is truly positive coaching and teaching these students lifelong lessons of discipline, dedication and camaraderie.h
