NEW YORK, NY, September 08, 2012 (Press-News.org) The world's greatest oyster shuckers will converge at the Grand Central Oyster Bar on Saturday, September 29, to compete for the $3,000 Grand Prize in the Professional Shucking Championships at the 10th Annual Grand Central Oyster Frenzy. The championships are co-sponsored by Blue Island Shellfish Farms and the Oyster Bar, and two dozen of the finest shuckers are expected to compete.
The first round of the title tilt begins at 1:00 P.M. and will feature six-time champ Luis "The Mexican Menace" Iglesias from Corona, Queens, defending his title on his Oyster Bar home turf. Second place is worth $1,000, and third place $500. In addition, the "Slurp Off" eating competition, and the Beer Shucking Championships sponsored by Bluepoint Brewery are both open to the public. Oyster maven John Bil will give a seminar entitled "The ABC's of Oysters."
Chef demonstrations will be hosted by 9-year-old phenom Sam Wahobe, who recently appeared at the White House with First Lady Michelle Obama; executive chef Ben Cicitto, Northeast regional chef for Phillips Seafood, among others. For information call 212-490-6650 or email info@oysterbarny.com.
