City of Pula Creates History by Hosting First Ever Hockey Tournament Inside an Ancient Roman Amphitheater

From September 14th to September 16th, Croatian city of Pula will host some of Europe's best ice hockey teams during a spectacular ice hockey event Arena Ice Fever Pula MMXII

2012-09-09
PULA, CROATIA, September 09, 2012 (Press-News.org) Croatian city of Pula is set to create history by hosting the first ever full sized ice hockey tournament - Arena Ice Fever Pula MMXII - inside its famous ancient Roman amphitheater. This ice hockey spectacle, which will bring modern day gladiators to a 2,000 year old Roman architectural wonder, will take place from September 14th to 16th.

City of Pula is no stranger to famous festivals and cultural events, such as Outlook and Dimensions music festivals, but its citizens are particularly proud of Arena Ice Fever Pula MMXII as this is the first time anyone attempted to place an ice rink inside such a historical masterpiece and during warm season. Additionally, city of Pula is proud that there were no technical difficulties in organizing the match within the walls of this important heritage site, almost as if the Romans foresaw the event two thousand years ago and constructed the Arena so that the proportions of the amphitheater fit the proportions of a modern ice hockey rink perfectly.

The size of the ice surface will be at the lower end of the rule-book's scale with 57 x 26 meters and 22 mega-trucks and it took two cranes to build up the rink and temporary stands. 70 employees and six foreign experts are currently working around the clock under the watchful eye of the Arena Conservatory to make sure the set-up and the maintenance of the ice rink will succeed with temperatures of up to 30C possible during the day in that time of the year.

During the Arena Ice Fever Pula MMXII tournament, Croatia's own hockey team Medvescak will play against Austrian UPC Vienna Capitals and Slovenian HDD Telemach Olimpija Ljubljana.

Apart from the ice hockey games, all visitors will be able to skate right by the sea while one of the most attractive games will be the match with Russian ice hockey legends.
